The NALAC Leadership Institute (NLI) is a week-long rigorous program in arts management and leadership development that delivers innovative and practical strategies that lead to successful business practices in the arts. The dynamic learning environment cultivates a familiar, inclusive cultural space that provides multiple generations of Latino artists, arts managers and cultural promoters the support, knowledge, and agency to confidently respond to and initiate solutions to complex cultural questions.


The goals of the Institute are to:

  • develop core capacities in the areas of arts management, networking, marketing, fund development;
  • deliver training via interactive group learning, consultations, and leadership simulations;
  • advance knowledge in the field of Latino artistic expressions, research and policy;
  • contextualize the frameworks that inform and affect Latino cultural production;
  • strengthen and expand the NALAC professional network;
  • promote awareness for planned organizational legacy and artistic/executive succession;
  • provide effective tools and research that optimize leadership competence; and,
  • prepare creative, strategic and nimble cultural leaders.


Applicants to the NLI are accepted from multiple generations of Latino artists, arts managers and cultural promoters in various stages of career development.  A group of 15-25 participants will be selected to attend the NLI in San Antonio, TX.




Latino artists, arts managers and cultural promoters in various stages of career development may apply.

At the time an application is submitted:

  • Applicant must be an arts professional, artist and/or administrator;
  • Applicant must be not be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program; and
  • Applicant must be an Individual or Organizational Member of NALAC.
  • Visit to renew or establish membership.

The Leadership Institute curriculum is based on the historical overview and analysis of Latino arts and cultures in the U.S., including the vital role of community involvement. This lens provides the framework for all Institute presentations, discussions, and exercises.  This estimate is subject to change based on final lodging costs.

Tuition to attend the NALAC 2018 Leadership Institute is $525 for one week of intensive training tailored to Latino artists, arts administrators and key staff of Latino arts organizations. It includes the opportunity of training, networking and learning about the San Antonio Latino arts community.


Most state and local arts agencies will match the cost of tuition and other costs to attend the Institute. Contact your state or local arts agency for details:

Travel:  Air travel

Meals:  Breakfast and lunch

Expenses Covered by Participant

Tuition    $525:  A week of intensive training.

Lodging  $610:  7 nights of hotel; shared double occupancy room

Dinner      $90:  Average dinner cost is $15 per day for seven days

Total Estimated Participant Expenses: $1225




The Institute Faculty consists of nationally recognized professionals and leaders in the arts and cultural field. In addition to the core faculty, the Institute includes several guest faculty members.



Maribel Alvarez, Ph.D. is an anthropologist, folklorist, curator, and community arts expert who has documented the practice of more than a dozen of the country's leading emerging and alternative artistic organizations. She holds a dual appointment as Associate Research Professor in the School of Anthropology and Associate Research Social Scientist at the Southwest Center, University of Arizona.

Abel López is Associate Producing Director of GALA Hispanic Theatre, and a frequent lecturer and consultant on workshops on board development, cultural diversity, and public relations and marketing.  Lopez is Chair of Americans for the Arts; past president of the Helen Hayes Awards, Theater Communications Group, the Performing Arts Alliance, and Leadership Washington and various organizations. He is a former chair of the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities and past chair of NALAC.

Rosalba Rolón is Artistic Director of Pregones Puerto Rican Traveling Theater, based in The Bronx, NY, which she co-founded in 1979. Ms. Rolón is a 2008 United States Artists Fellow, a Ford Foundation New Works Visionary Fellow and a performer, director and dramaturg. She favors the art of stage adaptation in an ensemble setting, working from non-dramatic texts. She is a Board Member of NALAC and of the United States Artists.
