OVERVIEW

The NALAC Advocacy Leadership Institute (ALI) provides a 2-month virtual preparatory curriculum which culminates in a 3-day intensive training focused on building arts advocacy skills. Throughout the hands-on training, participants will advance knowledge about the role of government and public institutions in the arts field. A group of 10-15 participants will be selected to attend the ALI in Washington, D.C., where Congressional Staff and experienced arts advocates will impart skills to enhance efforts on behalf of Latinx arts and culture. The goals of this advanced institute are to: 

 

  • cultivate a deeper understanding of the frameworks involved in shaping cultural policy, and its impact on Latinx artistic production and social justice;
  • provide research and instruction on advocacy protocols and strategies;
  • deliver immersion training via preparatory research and assignments, instruction, site visits, and consultations;
  • develop competencies for meaningful communication with local and state; elected officials, and with national congressional representatives and staff;
  • build relationships and initiate dialogue with policymakers to promote understanding of the Latinx arts sector’s needs while asserting the role of the arts in sustaining viable communities;
  • equip Fellows with the necessary tools to lead proactive efforts in their respective communities, and to deliver effective messages that will help broaden support for the arts; and,
  • nurture Fellows as an engaged group of active Latinx arts sector advocates.

 

Highlights of the NALAC Advocacy Leadership Institute include meetings with noted political leaders on Capitol Hill and members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus as well as meetings with senior staff at the National Endowment for the Arts and other resources from Capitol Hill. 

 

ELIGIBILITY

This training is open to all artists, administrators and cultural practitioners, including alumni of the NALAC Leadership Institute and Intercultural Leadership Institute. Please also note that past attendees of ALI are not eligible to apply.  Fellows will be selected to attend through a panel review process. At the time an application is submitted the applicant must be an Individual or Organizational Member of NALAC.

Carefully review the 2019 ALI Guidelines. Follow instructions to ensure that your application materials are complete. An incomplete application will not be considered.

Step 3

Prepare responses and materials for the online application.

Create a Submittable account. If you already have an account with Submittable, login.

Step 6

Enter User Account information and continue. Complete Narrative Essay & Artist Profile.

Step 7

Click “Add File” to attach Resume or CV

Step 8

Review your application one last time! Then, click “Apply Now” to submit.

Step 9

A confirmation email will be sent to the email address provided in Step 5.

Step 10

Applicants will be notified of their application status via email by February 2019.

                

 

ADVOCACY DEMYSTIFIED: GARNERING SUPPORT FOR THE ARTS

The NALAC Advocacy Leadership Institute curriculum is based on developing the capacity and potential of Latino artists and cultural workers to shape arts policy on the national and international stage. This lens provides the framework for all Institute presentations, discussions, and exercises. Topics and activities include:

 

  • Discover How the Legislative Process Impacts the Arts
  • Learn about the Congressional Hispanic Caucus
  • Create an Advocacy Plan
  • Successfully Prepare for Congressional Visits
  • Exchange Personal Arts Stories to Garner Support
  • Partner with National Advocacy Organizations Invested in the Arts
  • Exclusively meet with Federal Agencies
  • Engage with Policy Makers to Educate on Legislative Arts Priorities
  • Access Resources from Capitol Hill

 

ADVOCACY LEADERSHIP CORE FACULTY

The NALAC Advocacy Leadership Institute Faculty consists of nationally recognized professionals and leaders in the arts and cultural field. In addition to the core faculty, the Institute includes several guest faculty members.

Abel López (NALAC Board Member and Institute Faculty) is Associate Producing Director of GALA Hispanic Theatre, Chair of theatre Washington and Chair of the National Performance Network/Visual Arts Network. He is also past president of Americans for the Arts, National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures (NALAC), the Helen Hayes Awards, Theater Communications Group, the Performing Arts Alliance, the Alliance for Inclusion of the Arts, League of Washington Theatres, Salud, and Leadership Washington; past Chair of the Creative Communities Initiative of the Community Foundation of the National Capital Region; and past Chair of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities and the Board of Directors of the Helen Hayes Awards.

María López De León (CEO, Board & Faculty) is the President, CEO and board member of the National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures (NALAC). In January 2013, President Obama appointed Ms. De León to serve on the National Council of the Arts. In 2012 and 2013, Ms. De León was named among the nation’s Fifty Most Powerful and Influential People in the Nonprofit Arts. Ms. De León has been with NALAC for nineteen years and has served as President and CEO for three years and Executive Director for 18 years. Ms. De León has been involved in all aspects of development and implementation of the NALAC programs and strategic initiatives.

Rosalba Rolón (NALAC Board Member and Institute Faculty) is co-Founder and Artistic Director of the recently merged Pregones/Puerto Rican Traveling Theater, with venues in The Bronx and in Manhattan. She was awarded the 2018 Doris Duke award, is a United States Artists Fellow, and a Ford Foundation New Works Visionary Fellow. Since 1979, Rosalba has led the creation of Pregones’ original music theater repertory. She is a director and dramaturg and favors the art of stage adaptation in an ensemble setting, working from non-dramatic texts. With Pregones she has toured more than 500 cities in the U.S. and 18 countries.

 

ESTIMATED COSTS AT-A-GLANCE

The total estimated cost to participate in the 2019 NALAC Advocacy Leadership Institute is $1,020 which includes tuition, lodging, and dinner.

Travel:  Round-trip travel to DC

Tuition   $375:  Three days of intensive training.

Meals: Breakfast and lunch; Reception

Lodging $570:  4 nights of hotel in a shared double occupancy room.

 

Dinner     $75:  Average dinner cost is $25 per day for 3 evenings.

 

Total Estimated Participant Expenses: $1,020
