 About the Position:

NEFA seeks a full-time Finance Manager with prior experience in non-profit accounting to join the Finance team. Reporting to the Director of Finance and Administration, The Finance Manager is a hands-on finance professional with experience in managing the entire fiscal process, and interested in learning and growing into a senior role. They are adept with creating systems that support the financial and operating needs of the organization, and can expertly manage monthly and annual closings, establish and maintain internal controls, and work with external auditors to complete financial statements and tax filings.   

The Finance Manager reports to and works closely with the Director of Finance and Administration to support the needs of a demanding, fast-paced environment that values creativity and collaboration with a premium on professionalism and efficiency in the following areas of responsibility:

Essential Functions


Finance & Accounting

·         Administer the NEFA fiscal software including the receipt, disbursement, and general ledger systems;

·         Manage financial processes, such as payroll, A/R, A/P, etc.

·         Oversee and ensure compliance with accounting procedures and internal controls;

·         Design & maintain reports to support the budget process and management reporting for finance committee, board, and funders;

·         Design and maintain reporting tools for various NEFA departments;

·         Manage financial reporting and reimbursement process for federal funders;

·         Ensure compliance with the recordkeeping requirements of federal, state, and private funders;

·         Coordinate the auditor’s annual examination of NEFA and preparation of NEFA’s tax returns;


General Administration

·         In coordination with program staff, manage the grants contracting process: review contracts, flag issues for management and program staff, and provide financial information as needed;

·         Develop and maintain compliance-related policies and procedures related to NEFA’s status as both grant maker and recipient, such as procurement, lobbying, applicant eligibility.



·         Supervise and mentor the Finance Associate; establish and conduct regular meetings with supervisee; work with supervisee on developing immediate and long-term goals and conduct annual performance review around those goals.


Supervises the Finance Associate. Works closely with all members of the NEFA staff, especially grants and operations teams. Maintain positive working relationships with staff, board and committee members, NEFA’s audit partners, and any external vendors.

Annual amounts of any budget or grant dollars or resources controlled by this position: $7,000,000 – 25,000,000

Decision Making/Problem Solving

High degree of integrity, and discretion with confidential information. Must be well organized, motivated, detail-oriented and have sophisticated understanding of spreadsheets and database programs. Demonstrate initiative in problem solving, communicate effectively with a diverse array of staff, meet regular and multiple deadlines and work in partnership with other staff members to complete projects. Ability to multi-task, work independently and with a team in a fast-paced and high volume environment with emphasis on accuracy and timeliness.


· 5-10 years of significant professional accounting experience (public accounting and/or non-profit accounting experience preferred);

· Expert use of Microsoft Office Suite and financial accounting software programs;

·     Resourceful problem-solving skills in a team-based environment and attention to detail;

·       Excellent written and verbal communication skills;

·       Experience with MIP accounting software a plus;

·         Knowledge of and interest in the arts a plus.
