Estrella Vargas is a cinematographer and a film professor at DePaul University. She is a native of Chicago, but her roots run deep in Guerrero, Mexico. Estrella has always been proud of her Mexican culture, and the stories she tells reflect her experiences as an Afro-Indigenous woman. As an NFA recipient, Estrella will complete her screenplay Esperanza, a feature-film that follows the journey of a Black woman trying to connect with her lost Mexican roots. Estrella will explore the Costa Chica region of Guerrero and Oaxaca to include more Afro-Mexican perspectives in her story. She believes many people feel a sense of disconnection from mainstream latinidad because it often excludes African, Asian and Indigenous voices. This film is a love letter to her ancestors and to anyone who has ever felt that they are not “Latin@ Enough.”
