Safos Dance Theatre is a small non-profit dance company founded in Tucson in 2009. Focusing predominately on Latine dance artists, our mission is to create work that reflects the experiences of our Southwest and borderlands communities while encouraging innovative movements. We support Latine dance artists by introducing work to new audiences and connecting geographically isolated (2 hr drive, ~100 mi. away) dancers with regional, national communities. We recognize that geographic isolation limits access to resources, performance opportunities. To fulfill our mission, we collaborate with other Latine serving and/or AZ-based organizations. Current programs include: 1) Dance in the Desert (DITD): A Gathering of Latinx Dancemakers. 2) Las Fronterizas (LF) Ensemble, a multiyear, binational, multidisciplinary collaboration with Rising Youth Theatre (Phoenix), Border Arts Corridor (Douglas). Safos is the lead dance organization on the project. 3) “Stories from Home” (SFH), an evening length touring dance piece by Artistic Director Yvonne Montoya.
