MacDowell, America’s first multidisciplinary artist residency program, seeks a full-time (40 hours per week) Institutional Giving Manager (IGM) who will be based in our New York location. The IGM works under the direction of the Director of Development (DD) to secure foundation, corporate, and government funding and to support development efforts to raise more than $3 million annually for MacDowell. The IGM is responsible for initiating new contacts, maintaining long-term partnerships, and strengthening existing relationships that result in funding $600,000+ for both immediate and long-term goals as well as proactively seeking funding opportunities and generating new ideas and strategies to increase institutional revenue. Duties include generating grant proposals, inquiries, and reports as well as researching and pursuing institutional prospects. The IGM is also involved in MacDowell’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access (DEIA) work as it pertains to research, best practices, language, and overlap with fundraising efforts. Requirements include excellent writing and communications skills, commitment to anti-oppression and anti-racism, and a minimum of five years of experience in development. Experience working in the arts and familiarity with development databases and research are preferred.


Manage, cultivate, and steward institutional funding relationships

• Manage ongoing calendar of grant proposals, inquiries, and reports to foundations, corporations, and government agencies. Maintain regular contact with current grant relationships
• Coordinate with finance office to develop grant budgets and reports and maintain current records in our RENXT Database
• Coordinate special initiatives and take the lead on identifying and pursuing new funding opportunities
• Named Fellowships: Maintain records of all named Fellowships, produce Fellow and donor notification letters, produce all materials needed for Grants and Fellowship committee. Update website with Fellowship recipients annually
• Initiate and attend offsite meetings and events and make sure relevant contacts are invited to MacDowell events
• Research and develop new institutional funding prospects, with an emphasis on funding that furthers MacDowell’s DEIA goals
• Take an entrepreneurial approach to identifying and pursuing institutional prospects. Engage board, artists, and other contacts on potential funding ideas. In consultation with the DD, submit inquiries to foundations whose interests are aligned with MacDowell’s
• Generate prospect and donor profiles
• Support the DD in developing strategic programs aligning MacDowell’s mission with institutional funding interests.

Integrate Development and Communications activities

• Serve as the in-house editor for development materials
• Work with the Communications Manager to make sure development priorities are communicated clearly and consistently in all external relations
• Generate content for donor solicitations, correspondence, grant proposals, reports, webpages, and text for MacDowell publications and printed fundraising materials
• Create copy for the website, annual reports, and other places where Fellowships are listed, and copy for Fellowship fundraising at prospect events
• Write and edit select development-related materials for newsletters, website, press releases, and brochures
• Develop co-branding strategies with corporations and coordinate with events department on business sponsor proposals


• Professional experience on a development team over a period of 5-7 years
• Experience with capital campaigns a plus
• Bachelor’s and master’s degrees preferred
• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to interact well with board members, donors, artists, foundation, and corporate contacts
• Computer skills essential; Raiser’s Edge desirable.
• Ability to manage multiple responsibilities with changing priorities, and accomplish objectives in a fast-paced environment. Strong organizational skills, detail-oriented
• Enthusiastic, positive attitude and the ability to work both independently and in a team setting
• Passion for arts and creative thinking
• Commitment to anti-oppression and anti-racism and to increasing opportunities for artists of all backgrounds
• Extremely tactful and diplomatic in dealing with people and issues of confidentiality
• Some evening hours and occasional overnight travel required.

$65,000-$75,000 per year depending on experience; full-time, exempt, based in New York office with some remote work flexibility; benefits include health and dental insurance; life and short-term disability insurance; medical and dependent care flexible spending accounts; 403(b) retirement; NYS Paid Family Leave; and paid time off.
