The City of Mesa, Arizona, is seeking a new director for the i.d.e.a. Museum (imagination, design, experience, arts) after the retirement of long-time director Sunnee O’Rork. The Director (City title: i.d.e.a. Museum Administrator) is a senior manager within the City’s Arts and Culture Department. The i.d.e.a. Museum is dedicated to supporting early learning, nurturing creative thinking and engaging families. Through imaginative and creative experiences in ArtVille and the HUB Gallery, and temporary exhibitions that immerse visitors in thematically-focused learning and fun related activities, the museum helps build healthy families and supports community development.
This position leads the i.d.e.a. Museum staff, setting programmatic and operational priorities, articulating vision, leading the implementation of long-term strategies, and acting as the liaison to the i.d.e.a. Museum Foundation, a 501(c)3 support organization. The next director should be an experienced, visionary, creative and skilled leader, able to work with staff and volunteers to enhance the museum’s programs and facilities. Experience with family/youth programming and interactive arts, science and/or technology programming is preferred, along with the ability to lead a highly creative team with energy and professionalism.
The ideal candidate will have substantial experience in senior museum management, program development, fundraising and audience development. Capital campaign experience is a big plus, as is prior public sector experience, particularly in a municipal government. The City of Mesa seeks an innovative thought leader, an outgoing and articulate spokesperson, and a community-engaged advocate.
