Established in 1979, we are the only artist-founded museum in Los Angeles. We are dedicated and committed to collecting, presenting, and interpreting art created after 1940. With two distinct venues in Los Angeles—MOCA Grand Avenue and The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA—and Michael Heizer’s seminal artwork Double Negative (1969-70) in the Nevada desert, we engage audiences through an ambitious program of exhibitions, educational programs, and publishing.

The Exhibition Production Manager – Geffen Contemporary works onsite under the supervision of the Director of Exhibition Production to assist in the organization, management, and installation
of all exhibitions at MOCA’s Geffen Contemporary space. Primary responsibilities include the supervision of full-time and temporary employees, overall project management from conception
to implementation, assisting with the development of annual project budgets, identifying and developing improved procedures and techniques, and working closely with curators, artists, and
the full MOCA staff to plan for all exhibition and collection-related projects at the Geffen Contemporary. Because the scope of the Museum’s exhibition program incorporates conventional art forms as well as those which are more experimental in nature, the Exhibition
Production Manager must perform a wide variety of tasks and functions relating to all aspects of construction, fabrication, installation and maintenance of exhibitions.

Essential Functions:
• Work closely with the Registration Department, Curatorial Department, Exhibitions Management and artists to oversee all aspects of exhibition production at the Geffen Contemporary, including but not limited to planning and establishing a production schedule, identifying vendors, providing installation renderings, overseeing contractors and construction projects, managing installation teams, and monitoring budgets. This includes multiple concurrent projects in varying stages of the production process.
• Work closely with the Director of Exhibition Production, other Exhibition Production Managers, and Senior Preparators to recruit, hire, schedule, train, and manage all members of the Exhibition Production Department, including both full-time and temporary
• Act as department head in absence of the Director of Exhibition Production in meetings, both internal and external to the institution.
• Work with curators, architects, exhibition designers, and artists to design and develop floor plans and exhibition layouts.
• Work well as a team member and relate to a wide variety of staff and non-museum personnel.
• Foster a collegial and collaborative environment, contributing to the development of department staff at all skill levels.
• Work in a precise and careful manner under stringent deadlines.
• Display creativity in solving technical problems and flexibility in adapting to unusual circumstances.
• Develop and implement gallery maintenance procedures with Registration and Exhibition Production. Ensure the maintenance of all gallery spaces, workspaces, and artworks on display or in the collection.
• Safely handle art and objects placed within the Museum’s care, using best practices. Ensure standards of care and safe handling as set by the Museum are upheld at all times.
• Coordinate and supervise mandatory safety and equipment training sessions. Comply with and uphold safety standards for all equipment use.
• Operate fork/aerial lifts.
• Work closely with the Director of Exhibition Production to develop and maintain ongoing relationships with outside contractors and vendors.
• Work closely with other departments particularly Operations, Facilities and Security to provide continued support to the greater museum.


• Minimum of at least five years’ experience in museum preparation or related field with a minimum of 2 years working in a supervisory role in a museum, gallery, or studio setting. Contemporary art museum experience preferred.
• Proven managerial skills.
• Excellent manual dexterity and visual acuity skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Advanced knowledge of museum best practices including the safe handling, care and installation of all art objects, installation hardware, and gallery lighting.
• Advanced fabrication skills and multimedia installation experience; extensive experience working with hand, mechanical and power tools.
• Ability to multitask on a variety of concurrent projects. Effectively manage details as well as the larger scope of any given project.
• Ability to work nights and weekends when needed.
• Ability to travel domestically and internationally.

While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent must be able to do the following:

• Stand for long periods
• Bend, stoop, reach, lift, and climb to move materials and operate artwork
• Climb up and down stairs and ladders
• Reach both above and below shoulder height
• Be able to lift up to 50 pounds
• Manual dexterity to operate manually controlled equipment and artwork
• Ability to visually inspect work; specific visual abilities include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
• Be comfortable operating equipment such as mechanical lifts and power tools

Desired Skills

• Knowledge of various fabrication techniques and methods required to install all forms of art including video works and large-scale multi-media installations
• Extensive rigging experience and relevant certification to use forklifts, personnel lifts, and other motorized equipment.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe CS, Sketchup, Rhino, Auto CAD, and or other relevant exhibition design Software.
• Knowledge of contemporary art.

Salary range: $70K to $80K
