Acerca de

Ramón Ramos Alayo was selected by the Cuban government to study dance in Santiago de Cuba at age 11. He earned a Masters degree in contemporary and folkloric dance and dance education from Havana’s National School of Art. He was principal dancer with Danza del Caribe, Narciso Medina Contemporary Dance. As artistic director of Alayo Dance Company, CubaCaribe’s resident company, Alayo received a prestigious Gerbode Foundation Emerging Choreographer’s Award and a SF Bay Guardian Goldie Award, and was named “Best Dance Dynamo” in the SF Bay Guardian’s “Best of the Bay”. As co-curator CubaCaribe’s annual festival, he stays attuned to the needs of artists in the Afro-Caribbean Diaspora community. He teaches classes in creative movement, Afro-Cuban modern, and Cuban popular for children, adults and dance professionals. Alayo is known for fusing modern, Cuban folkloric, and popular dance – something intrinsic to Cuban culture but rarely seen in the Bay Area.
