Latinos Again Excluded from Kennedy Center Honors

As the leading Latino arts and culture organization in the nation, NALAC is troubled by what could easily indicate a broader or systemic exclusionary practice that continues to remain unaddressed within the Kennedy Center Honors program. The Kennedy Center, recognized as the national center for the performing arts, reflects very little in its Honors program that represents our nation’s diversity or tells the story of the nation’s diverse artistic achievements.

The newly appointed Kennedy Center President, Deborah Rutter, has invited the Latino Advisory Council to a luncheon on October 3, 2014 at 12:30 p.m. NALAC representatives look forward to working with Rutter and the Kennedy Center board to assure that equity and diversity become core values practiced across the organization.  By the year 2020, the majority of young people in the U.S. will be people of color. By 2040, the majority of this country’s population will be people of color. Clearly, the face of our nation continues to change and the role of the arts in representing that shift as well as uplifting the artistic expressions of these communities is important; a reality that seems to escape the Kennedy Center’s leadership.
