NFA Artist Project $5000 | Multidisciplinary |  Oakland, CA

To support Untitled a visual and performance art exhibition by Xandra Ibarra that contends with the pleasures and perils of employing a hyper-racialized/ sexualized persona as an artistic strategy to combat racial tropes. Using parody, or what she calls “spictacles ” from 2002 to 2012, performance artist Xandra Ibarra embodied her own racial and sexual abjection through her persona La Chica Boom. The exhibition will feature La Chica Boom’s works through various visual art components such as video, photographs, installation and objects that use hyper-representations of Latino raciality/sexuality/gender as a mode of inquiry into the relationships between Latinidad, pop-culture, and political initiatives.
