To support Presenting: MUNDO CRUEL Residency by Gil Rene + Producciones En Equipo, a weeklong residency by musician and theater artist Gil Rene and Producciones En Equipo, from Puerto Rico, as a highlight of our Presenting Season and LGBTQ-themed Asuncion Project in May 2016. The residency includes the NY premiere of En Equipo's much lauded original production MUNDO CRUEL, adapted from Luis Negron's Lambda Literary Award winning book, plus ancillary artist and community engagement activities.

Here & Now: 2016


Partner: Carla Forte, Natalia Lassalle Morillo, Charo Oquet and Sandra Portal-Andreu


 To support Here & Now 2016, in which Miami Light Project will commission and present four new pieces created by Miami-based Latino artists – Carla Forte, Natalia Lassalle Morillo, Charo Oquet and Sandra Portal-Andreu. Artists receive a commission award, rehearsal space and production support in preparation for the premiere of their pieces on May 12-14 and 19-21, 2016, at The Light Box at Goldman Warehouse in Miami's Wynwood Arts District. Carla Forte will create a  dance and video art piece that plays with ideas of femininity and masculinity. Charo Oquet will present “The Miami Flyers”, an installation that will use audience interaction, ritual and performance to look at the relationship among Miami’s Haitian, Cuban and Dominican communities.  For “Drowning: Part II”, Natalia Lassalle Morillo will pay homage to aging through the bodies and personal stories of five elderly women, incorporating text, dance and film to portray their fragility, solitude and companionship. Choreographer Sandra Portal-Andreu will use dialogue, film, sound and movement to look at how women can be their own worst enemies.

To support the presentation of ’57 CHEVY, a solo performance piece MACLA co-commissioned for Ricardo Salinas based on a script by Cris Franco, a popular stand-up comedian and award-winning television writer and playwright.  ’57 CHEVY is the autobiographical story of a young man’s journey in the back of his father’s baby blue 1957 Chevy—traversing physical and cultural borders, beginning from Mexico City to the United States and later from culturally diverse South Central Los Angeles to the San Fernando Valley, where the family faces the challenges of being the only Mexican family in a predominantly Anglo community during the 1960s.

Hi-ARTS Gallery Presents: Mr. Salsa

To support Hi-ARTS Gallery Presents: Mr. Salsa, an exhibition focusing on Izzy Sanabria, an artist who designed hundreds of album covers and concert posters for the some of the most famous names in Latin music. This project is an opportunity to celebrate the cultural legacy of salsa in a community in which this is most appreciated. Hi-ARTS is a vibrant part of the East Harlem community, and we seek to illuminate the voices of our own unsung heroes.

To support Ballet Hispanico’s Instituto Coreográfico that will host emerging choreographer Stephanie Martinez in May 2016. Martinez will spend two weeks in residence at Ballet Hispanico, working with the Ballet Hispanico Company on creating, developing, and strengthening new work. At the conclusion of the residency, the work will be presented in a public showing at Ballet Hispanico with plans to be fully produced as part of Ballet Hispanico’s 2016-17 New York season.

Global Fridays: Dafnis Prieto Si o Si Quartet

To support the presentation of Dafnis Prieto's Si o Si Quartet as part of the Fall 2016 Global Fridays series in September during National Hispanic Heritage Month at the Arab American National Museum (AANM). Dafnis Prieto is a drummer, composer, and educator from Cuba. His awards include the 2011 MacArthur Fellowship Award, a Grammy Award Nomination for Absolute Quintet as Best Latin Jazz Album, and a Latin Grammy Nomination for Best New Artist in 2007. This project will enable the AANM to further institutionalize relationships between audiences and artists, particularly those who are marginalized by language, class, gender, and ethnicity.

To support Visiones, a three-day festival celebrating Latino arts and culture. The festival will include screenings of new films by Latino filmmakers, a visual arts exhibition of works by primary artistic partner Favianna Rodriguez and local Latino artists, and a workshop led by Ms. Rodriguez. Visiones will explore the Latino community’s vision for the future and empower Latino artists to define their evolving identity through art.
