The Volunteer’s Role


El Salvador is a country of many passions and one of them is theater! In the beautiful colonial town of Suchitoto works our partner, Primer Acto-Es Artes, to support the economic and social development of the community through the arts. Es Artes offers training through the Escuela de Artes, Tecnicas y Oficios de la Escena (School of Theater Arts, Technical and Management Professions) where students can explore their artistic interests in a four-year program to become performance professionals. The organization also coordinates the work of a theater group and offers workshops in schools of the region as well as entrepreneurship workshops for professionals of the arts and tourism industries.


We are looking for an Acting Teacher to contribute to the training and strengthening of the theater group. As a volunteer, you will conduct training sessions for acting teachers and actors, direct a play and support the 5th Annual Suchitoto Theater Festival. Come bring your experience in acting, creativity and love for theater to contribute to the development of young actors and the artistic community in Suchitoto!

As a volunteer, you will:

- Work with the theatre school teachers, who are also members of the acting company, to upgrade their pedagogical practice.

- Teach classes in theatre practice to members of EsArtes, perhaps with a focus on a specific mode or style of theatre: acting, directing, improvisation, physical theatre, clown, mime, movement, scene     study, voice, production, etc.

- Support or assist, in a devised creation of a play

- Support to produce the V Festival Suchitoto Es Artes (December)

- Support and advise a theatre production with the theatre company, with performances in April 2018.

Essential Academic Qualifications:

- A degree or diploma in Theatre Arts, or related areas

(Ideal for mature undergraduate, or graduate students in theatre)

Essential Professional Background:

- Experience with theatre companies, at the professional, community, or university level

- Experience with theatre education is an asset

- Experience with theatre directing, at the professional, community or university level is an asset


Support Package

- Modest monthly living allowance (varies depending country)

- Pre-departure training and in-country orientation

- Travel and accommodation for reintegration debriefing weekend

- Modest support for accompanying partners and dependents going on placement with you for 12 months or longer

- Access to Employee Assistance Program while in placement and upon return

- Cuso International assessment day (Candidates must cover the first $200 of the most cost-effective travel expenses and all accommodation costs).

- Travel and accommodation for the five-day pre-departure training course and for in-country orientation
