Mid-America Arts Alliance has an exceptional opportunity for an experienced and detailed oriented, full-time arts education professional. The objective of this position is to provide operational support for the Arts and Humanities Programming Division, a fast-paced department central to the artistic mission of the organization. More specifically, he/she is responsible for supporting constituent’s public engagement and audience development needs, the execution of project and/or program evaluations, and tracking constituent feedback.


The position requires flexibility and skill to undertake projects that can change from day to day; to communicate effectively with project stakeholders, management, and other relevant parties; and to handle confidential matters requiring absolute discretion. 


The ideal candidate for this position will have at least three years of experience in a museum and/or arts education environment, a history of demonstrating initiative, a strong intuitive sensibility, and the ability to coordinate and maintain priorities. They must possess excellent computer skills (primarily Microsoft Office) and be able to project a professional organization image via in-person, phone, and mailed communications.


Mid-America Arts Alliance is headquartered in the Crossroads Arts District of Kansas City, Missouri. M- AAA brings more art to more people in communities throughout our six-state region (Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas) and the nation. With an annual operating budget of over $4 million and 25 staff members we produce and manage more than 450 exhibition, performance, and professional development opportunities in more than 300 communities for more than one million people annually. 


Primary Responsibilities:

Perform a variety of essential duties that include:

  • Develop and produce programming resources and educational materials that meet the needs of a wide variety of constituents, including exhibition interactives, programming guides, and gallery guides;
  • Provide educational support and guidance to venues hosting traveling exhibitions;
  • Collaborate closely with the NEH on the Road humanities curator for development of programming direction, interpretation, programming guide content, and assessment of programming grant applications as needed;
  • Assist with the organization and implementation of exhibition orientation sessions;
  • Fact-checking, proofing and/or copy-editing written exhibition materials as needed;
  • Occasionally assisting other M-AAA staff members, contracted specialists, and guest curators with the development, documentation, refurbishment, and/or dispersal of exhibition projects;
  • As requested, develop assessment tools, track surveys and evaluations, and compile reports based on organizational, programmatic, and/or constituent needs;
  • Keep abreast of trends and directions in arts, humanities, museum, and community-based education and integrate that knowledge into educational materials and the development of assessment tools;
  • Attend department meetings; and
  • Other duties as assigned.


Working Conditions:             

Work is both sedentary and requires physical activity including the ability to lift 20 pounds. This includes sitting at a desk using a computer, phone and other office equipment, as well as walking and occasionally driving to various locations as needed. Will occasionally be required to travel for education events and/or conferences as needed. While a majority of work occurs in relation to education materials development for touring exhibitions, this person will be required to be flexible to changing priorities and new objectives.


Performance Measures:

The following are key items that will be utilized to evaluate work performance:

  • Demonstrated ability to produce high quality educational programming materials utilizing a variety of delivery mechanisms;
  • Meeting deadlines;
  • Quality of service offered as demonstrated by friendly, timely, and accurate responses to all individuals;
  • Accurate and complete data entry and documentation of project/program evaluation information;
  • Effective working relationships with all internal divisions and project partners;
  • Ability to interpret and explain facets of M-AAA programs and procedures to others;
  • Maintenance of quality constituent relationships via phone calls, e-mail, mailings, and other methods as determined by programming needs; and a
  • Pro-active approach to responsibilities.


The successful candidate will have a demonstrated mix of the following:

  • Master’s degree preferred in art or humanities education, art history, material culture, curatorial/museum studies or other related field; minimum B.A. in related fields.
  • Minimum of three years experience in museum and/or arts education or other equivalent areas of experience;
  • Demonstrated experience in developing, monitoring, and reporting project/program evaluations;
  • Excellent communication, writing, and presentation skills;
  • General knowledge of museum theory, practice, and operations;
  • Strong MS Office skills (Word, Excel); working knowledge of Salesforce (or other database management software) and Adobe design programs, and A/V editing experience (Garage Band, iMovie, Final Cut Pro, etc.) preferred;
  • Well-organized, detail-oriented, and able to prioritize and work on multiple, complex projects at the same time; and
  • Professional demeanor and ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
