The National Association of Latino Arts and Culture (NALAC) is proud to announce that the NALAC FUND FOR THE ARTS (NFA) has been selected as the 2007 recipient of the Heineken Green Ribbon initiative.  Since 2003, this initiative selects an organization each year to support Latin music and musicians across the country.

Congratulations to 2007 USA Fellows

        

Latino artists Benjamin Aranda, Daniel Joseph Martinez, Cherrie Moraga, Virgil Ortiz, Monica Ponce de Leon, Marcos Ramirez ERRE, Alex Rivera, John Santos, Luis Valdez and Helen Maria Viramontes were among 50 artists chosen to receive unrestricted fellowship grants of $50,000 each from the United States Artists. United States Artists (USA) exists to nurture, support, and strengthen the work of America’s finest living artists. This program supports a diverse array of visual, literary, performing, design, media, and crafts and traditional artists. Tomas Ybarra Frausto Receives Top Honor from Mexico

Congratulations to Tomas Ybarra Frausto for receiving Order of the Aztec Eagle medal, Mexico's highest award for noncitizens. He was one of four people in the arts awarded for their service to America's southern neighbor in a ceremony at Washington's Cultural Institute of Mexico this month.

Chicago's Teatro Luna Presents MACHOS thru Dec. 16

Men. Women. Women dressed as men. Teatro Luna, Chicago's All-Latina Theater Company, announces the world premiere of MACHOS, an interview based play about contemporary masculinities. In 2006, frustrated with our boyfriends, brothers, and bosses, our company of Latina women set out to answer the question: what are men really thinking? The result is MACHOS, a performance drawn from interviews with 50 men nationwide and performed by an all-Latina cast in drag. Claudia Bernardi Exhibit at 40 Acres Art Gallery in Sacramento thru Dec. 30

  

Silence Was Hostile and Almost Perfect/El silencio era hostil y casi perfecto

40 Acres' retrospective of this Argentinean artist's work showcases her seminal pure pigments on paper "frescos" that explore identity, human rights, and the difficult topic civil war, particularly that of El Salvador's tragic loss of life, many of them children, as a result of the country's internal conflicts over 25 years ago. The artist is also passionate about education, so in addition to her exhibition, she will be completing a 3-month artist-in-residence with students at Sacramento High School.

Educational programming will include a recognized panel of scholars for a symposium discussing the history, wars and human rights violations of Central America, a discussion with author and journalist Mark Danner about the massacre at Mozote, and a youth exhibition of artwork completed by students in Perquin, El Salvador, where Bernardi spends each summer at the school she has founded. 3428 3rd Avenue, Sacramento, CA 95817. La Pastorela:  Desesperados in the Desert! Shepherd’s Play with Mercado in Arizona, Nov. 19 - Dec. 9

Desesperados in the Desert! November 29 through December 9 with Zarco Guerrero and a lively cast of seasoned actors as well as talented upstarts. Good and evil battle it out in this homegrown rendition of a traditional Pastorela, a surreal reenactment of the shepherds’ journey across the desert to greet the new born Baby Jesus. Community theater at its best, it includes music, dance and the extensive use of masks.  This year’s La Pastorela will also feature an Artist Mercado, a market component.  Cultural Coalition, Inc. has invited local artist vendors from Calaca Cultural Center and the Phoenix Fridas to exhibit and sell their work at the venues before and after performances.

Partnerships with the Mesa Association of Hispanic Citizens, Mecha @ Mesa Community College, the West Valley Arts Council, Prensa Hispana, Chicanos Por La Causa and the Mexican Consulate, as well as grants from the Arizona Commission on the Arts and the Phoenix Arts Commission, are supporting six performances in Phoenix, Mesa, Glendale and Tolleston, Arizona. Urban 15 Presents “The Holiday Laser Show” featuring Tim Walsh, Dec. 7-9 in San Antonio

The URBAN-15 Group will be hosting its third Annual HOLIDAY LASER SHOW  at the URBAN-15 Studios located at 2500 S. Presa.  Seating per show is limited to 150 people so advance reservations are recommended. General Public presentation admission is $10 for adults; $5 for students with middle, high school and college ID’s and $4 for children under 12. “The Holiday Laser Show” is a stunning 3D multimedia spectacular of choreographed laser beams, vivid animation and astounding light effects performed to holiday music favorites and carols.

Vik Muniz Exhibit and Documentary at Museo de las Americas in Denver

  
The Worst Possible Illusion: The Curiosity Cabinet of Vik Muniz Saturday, December 8, 2007, 7pm.

Muniz Remastered: Photographs From the West Collection, organized by Devon Dikeou in partnership with the West Collection. Muniz Remastered presents a selection of reinterpretations by Muniz of masters such as Corot, Durer, Aaron Siskind, Rembrandt, Waritor, and others in Muñiz’s unique artistic style. These works are new approaches to infamous images and included in this exhibition are reinterpretations to well-known works such as Théodore Géricault’s Raft of the Medusa and Cezanne’s Still Life With Apples.

The Museo’s new CineManteca film series presents, The Worst Possible Illusion: The Curiosity Cabinet of Vik Muniz, a documentary film following Vik Muniz from his studio in Brooklyn, New York; to his native Brazil, Chicago and Arizona. Rocky Mountain National Park Artist-In-Residence Program

Applications are now beings accepted for the 2008 Artist-in-Residence Program at Rocky Mountain National Park in Estes Park, Colo. The program offers professional writers, composers, and visual and performing artists the opportunity to purse their artistic discipline while being surrounded by the park’s inspiring landscape. Selected artists stay in a historic, rustic cabin for two-week periods from June through September. No stipend is provided. Mid Atlantic Arts Federation Artists & Communities Grant Deadline Dec. 3

Artists from the District of Columbia, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania are eligible for support through the Artists & Communities program. Artists & Communities offers support to partnerships between visiting artists and non-profit organizations engaged in community-based creative projects. The program supports residencies by visiting artists from the District of Columbia, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania at non-profit organizations located in the region served by Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation. This region comprises Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Virginia, and West Virginia. Any non-profit organization in the region may apply.

Creative artists from the District of Columbia, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania (choreographers, composers, poets, writers, filmmakers, media and visual artists of all kinds) are supported in collaborative partnerships outside their home community with arts and/or community organizations. These projects serve to motivate and encourage people to examine issues of importance to them, thereby increasing appreciation of the role of the arts in community life. USArtists International Guidelines Available
Program Supports U.S. Artists at International Festivals 

The National Endowment for the Arts and Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation announce the availability of guidelines for the 2008/2009 cycle of USArtists International("USAI"), a program designed to support U.S. performing artists at international festivals. USAI provides support for U.S. dance and music ensembles that have been invited to participate in international festivals in the European Union, Russia, and the Ukraine. Eligible countries include: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, The Netherlands, the Ukraine, and the United Kingdom. Applicants must be designated by the I.R.S. as a 501(c)(3) organization, or have a fiscal agent that is designated as a 501(c)(3) organization.

The deadlines for the program are January 7, 2008 for projects taking place between March 1, 2008 and February 28, 2009 and May 5, 2008 for projects taking place between July 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009.


  

La Jolla Music Society Seeks Artistic Administrator

The Artistic Administrator serves as a liaison between La Jolla Music Society, artist management and artists, communicating on behalf of the President and Artistic Director to accurately and professionally represent La Jolla Music Society throughout the artistic programming process and during the concert season. The position is responsible for organizing, coordinating and communicating all details related to artists performing at SummerFest and the regular season. QUALIFICATIONS • Bachelors Degree in music, theatre arts, business, communications or other related field. • 5+ years experience working in non-profit arts organization or other performing art and its staging and performance. Detailed knowledge in classical music repertoire with an emphasis in Chamber Music repertoire. Background in artistic planning/programming and/or other performance bookings. • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with a wide variety of audiences through various mediums (verbal, print, online). MOLAA in Long Beach  Seeks Vice President of Programs


Located in the East Village Arts District in the Southern California beach city of Long Beach, the Museum of Latin American Art (MoLAA) seeks an experienced Vice President of Programs. Founded in 1996, MoLAA’s mission is to educate the public about contemporary Latin American fine art through the presentation of a significant permanent collection, dynamic exhibitions and related cultural and educational programs. MoLAA is celebrated as a pan-Latino cultural center for its comprehensive representation of Latin American art, culture and heritage. This is an ideal opportunity for a passionate individual to create awareness of the richness and diversity of Latin American art and culture throughout Southern California.

The VP of Programs will oversee the preparation of the departmental budgets and will be responsible for writing and negotiating a variety of contracts with individual artists, performance groups and other related contractors. Responsible for developing a marketing strategy and a tactical plan to promote each event and for overseeing ticket sales and setting event prices that generate earned revenue. The VP of Programs will provide support for events presented by other museum departments as needed. The successful candidate will have a Bachelors degree; a minimum of five year experience in events programming; management experience required.

 The City of Austin's Art in Public Places (AIPP) program is looking nationwide for visual artists or artist teams to apply for a public art project that will enhance the City's new Mexican-American Cultural Center (MACC). The selected artist will provide designs for an artistic and fully functional shade structure for the MACC's Zocalo area, the concrete plaza in front of the building. The selected artist will work as a design team member, and will collaborate with and receive input from the project architects- CasaBella Architects and Mexican based architect Teodoro Gonzalez de Leon, landscape architects and others on the MACC design team.

The public art budget is $200,000, including artist design fees, fabrication, installation, engineer sealed drawings, insurance requirements and travel. Artists must be available to travel to Austin as needed for design team meetings. UC Merced Seeks Artists in Residence 

UC Merced Global Arts Studies Program (GASP) seeks professional artists for appointments of one or two semesters to teach and to interact with scholars engaged in study of arts within a multicultural framework. Scholars in Global Arts Studies Program (GASP) study human creativity as expressed through visual, aural and material culture. GASP defines the arts broadly in order to engage a diverse array of art interests. GASP investigates effects of industrialization, colonialism, commercialism and globalization on art practices. GASP curriculum also explores relationships between popular art and high art, art scholarship and art practice, and gender and art, among others. Each Artist in Residence will be expected to teach two four unit studio courses a semester (four hours a week per course for fifteen weeks). Artists will be free to offer classes that may consist of creation of theatrical, dance, or music performance.

Qualifications:  A qualified candidate must demonstrate professional strength in his or her particular area of artistic expertise with no less than five years of professional experience and with documented national or international exposure. A qualified candidate will have proof of excellence in teaching. Candidates must demonstrate and ability and willingness to collaborate with scholars. KAC Seeks Visual Artist to Create Governor’s Arts Awards

The Kansas Arts Commission is soliciting visual artists to design and make artistic awards for recipients of the Governor’s Arts Awards. The awards honor distinguished artists, arts organizations and patrons and will be given at a dinner and ceremony. Awards must include the title Governor’s Arts Award, the name of the category for the award given and the name of the recipient receiving the award. Awards must be identical.
 
Artists must be at least 18-years-old and not currently enrolled in a college or academic setting. All applications must be mailed with a U.S. postmark or delivered to the Kansas Arts Commission office by Friday, February 22, 2008.
