Re - Decomposition of Bone China

Juana Valdes

To support new works by Juana Valdez that alter the clay “body” through its chemical composition by adding pigment directly to the clay. Her new series questions the historical “value” of Bone China as a commodity, its design, economic history and its use as a raw material to create new non-traditional clay pieces that emulate skin tones and the appearance of hanging skin, drapery, or rawhide. By adding color to Bone China and taking away its pureness – its “whiteness” – the value that the material has received historically is challenged. These pieces use the exploration of abstraction and color to create iconographic meaning.
